Hello everyone,

I hope you are all off to a good start for 2012!

It’s also that time of year when we start thinking about the WVHIMA annual convention and also the election of new officers.

Our convention will be held in Parkersburg this year at the Blennerhassett Historic Hotel. Take a look at this beautiful hotel at theblennerhassett.com. More information will be coming in the next few weeks about room rates, etc. The education and convention committees have been planning an enjoyable and interesting day and a half agenda for us. The tentative topics will include more in-depth ICD-10 material, a keynote speaker and workshop on productivity, organizing skills, and Discovering Your Organizational Style, and other pertinent topics for our breakout sessions. The convention will be a half day, Tuesday, April 24th and full day on Wednesday, April 25th. We understand that cost and timing are important to all of you, so we’ve tried to be sensitive to location and cost. Keep a close eye on the WVHIMA website and our Community of Practice for updated information.

And, it is now time to secure a new slate of nominees ready for the election of 2012-20I3 officers. I hope you will all think seriously about the possibility of holding an office with the WVHIMA board. I have been a board member now for a few years, and I have to tell you it is very rewarding. Over the past 30+ years, I’ve been a member of WV and also of MD, but did not take an active role until the past three years. Being active on the board has been a very enjoyable and rewarding experience – personally and professionally. I am much more aware of what is happening in our profession, and find myself being much more interested in what is going on and where we are going. Yes, it takes commitment, and yes it takes some time to fulfill the duties of being a board member, but it has never been so much that it is a burden. As a committee chair, then president-elect, and now president I’ve found that the board truly works together so that no one person is saddled with all the responsibility, no matter what the job is that needs to be done.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a member – you are an asset to the organization, and can offer so much. There are plenty of us to guide you along and help you learn the ropes, so don’t let that be a deterrent.

The nominating committee is seeking nominations for the following positions:

  • President Elect

  • Secretary

  • 1st Year Director

  • Nominating Committee

The responsibilities of each position are:

PRESIDENT ELECT - This person will serve as aide to the President, learning to conduct business for WVHIMA, as well as attend Summer Team Talks and Leadership Conference (July) by AHIMA in Chicago, Serve as a delegate to AHIMA (October, and attend Winter Team Talks and Hill Day (March) in Washington DC.

SECRETARY - This person records all the minutes of the WVHIMA and Board of Director meetings. This person can also assist coordinating the meetings for the President.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE - two elected members serve with the second year past president to seek individuals to run for vacant offices for the upcoming year.

Learn more about policies and procedures by visiting WVHIMA.org and selecting the “About Us” tab.

I hope you will seriously consider serving your profession by holding an elected office. Truly – it is a very positive experience. Please go to wvhima.org and select About Us, then Board Nominations to complete the form and also contact Jamie Anderson at andersonj@wvuhealthcare.com.

Enjoy the little bit of snow we’ve had! See you in April.
