Distinguished Member Award

Every year, WVHIMA recognizes one member for outstanding service within the organization. This award is known as the WVHIMA Distinguished member award.   Nominations will be accepted until March 4, 2018.

The nominations are tallied by a points system and the person nominated that receives the most points becomes the WVHIMA Distinguished Member for the year. A person may only receive the distinguished member award once in their lifetime. View our list of distinguished members.

To be eligible for nomination the candidates must have made an outstanding contribution to the WVHIMA profession in more than one of the following areas.

  1. Service to WVHIMA Members
  2. Outstanding achievement in professional practice
  3. Contributions in research or published materials.
  4. Leadership in education

Candidates for WVHIMA distinguished member must have been an active member of WVHIMA for eight years or longer.

Only one nomination per member per year is accepted. Nominations will be accepted through March 4th, and the Distinguished Member will be notified by March 19.

Academic Achievement Awards

The academic achievement awards financially assist qualified students who have completed courses in an accredited West Virginia college/university program and are eligible to write the examination for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) as administered by the American Health Information Management Association.

Up to six awards may be awarded each year. The number of awards for that year will be determined by the WVHIMA board based on the financial situation of the organization for that year. Each of the Academic awards granted is named in honor of WVHIMA individuals who have made significant impacts on WVHIMA. Click here to read more on each award.

Qualifications of the recipient(s) of such award(s) will be determined by academic achievement and by meeting the eligibility criteria.

Applications will be accepted through March 4th, and awardees will be notified by March 19.

Professional Development Awards

The WVHIMA Board of Directors approved a new award, known as the “Professional Development Award(s)” to financially assist qualified WVHIMA member to take for any of the examinations offered by American Health Information Management Association found at the website, including the RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CCS, CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, CHPS, CHTS, and CPHI.

Qualifications of the applicants include:

  • WVHIMA member in good standing
  • AHIMA member (for membership exam pricing)
  • Ranking based upon essay responses to core component areas:
    • Professional Goals
    • Accomplishments
    • WVHIMA Involvement
    • Leadership
    • Final Comments.

Applications should be submitted online here, and will be accepted through March 4th.  Award winners will be notified by March 19.
